Over the summer, the CEASC Board of Directors voted to move forward with the 2022 season, hopeful and excited for the coming school year. During the first week of September, we opened registration, having laid the groundwork for the entire year only to receive an overwhelming response indicating that you, our CEASC teachers, may not be able to participate this year. Once I realized our event was in danger, I released a survey, with the support of the Board, to determine how we should proceed.

Given the responses I received via the survey, phone calls, text messages, and emails, I must inform you that the Board of Directors voted to suspend our activities for one more year. A vast majority of teachers are unable to bring participants this year for one or more of the following reasons:

1. Teachers are concerned about student safety amidst a rise in Covid 19 and Delta variant cases across the state, especially in elementary-aged students who cannot yet get the vaccine.

2. Districts across Colorado are not yet permitting elementary choir activities due to Covid restrictions.

3. The Broadmoor, CMEA, and CEASC were not going to be able to enforce social distancing or mask mandates given the sheer size of our groups and the size of our rehearsal and performance venues.

4. On October 1st, CEASC would have finalized all contracts with conductors, accompanists, venues, vendors (i.e. insurance, event security, CMEA accountants, etc.). We would have owed anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000, depending on contractual cancellation policies. In order to make our event feasible financially, we had to register a minimum of 245 students with $50 participation fee AND sell a minimum of $10,000 in concert tickets…money we could not have refunded to our students in the event that we were shut down.

I want to assure you that the Board made this decision with heavy hearts, wanting only to serve the best interests of our students. I am eternally grateful to be a part of the CEASC Board of Directors, and I want to recognize these individuals for the outstanding work they do to provide such a prestigious event for the young singers of Colorado. I could not do my job without every single one of them!!!!

Chair-Elect – Melissa Vander Stelt
Immediate-Past Chair – Olivia Tremblay
Secretary – Tricia Kidd
Members-at-Large – Kathleen Cribari, Joseph LaCombe, Karen Lange, Amy MacGruder, Debi Schlatter, Taylor Smith, Yvette Teschner, and LaShele Warren

I also want to recognize Bill Kohut, the Executive Director of CMEA. As the business employee of the CMEA Executive Committee and State Assembly, he has worked tirelessly with me to continue the work of CEASC, and to guarantee the longevity of both CMEA and CEASC.

Finally, I want to leave you with this: CEASC will thrive again!!!! We thank YOU, the teachers in the trenches who are fighting to preserve music education in a world none of us saw coming. You are amazing and WE could not do our jobs without your love of your students and your passion for our chosen profession. I wish you the best in the school year to come. I will be in touch in the summer of 2022.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Stream – CEASC Chair

Colorado Middle School All State Choir

Colorado Middle All State Choir offers 7th and 8th grade students in Colorado a chance to audition for one of our three elite ensembles: Women’s Choir, Treble Choir, and Men’s Choir. Designed to be a transition between the Elementary and High School All State models, CMASC requires students to audition with a prepared piece, as well as demonstrate their technical skills, but ensures students from all CMEA Districts have representation at the event. The two-day event is held at the Colorado Convention Center, where students have the opportunity to sing with other talented, motivated, and dedicated singers, as well as learn from elite clinicians from around the country. The culminating concert is held on the final evening in the 5,000 seat Bellco Theatre and is open to the public. All directors who have students auditioning or participating must be an active member of CMEA at the time of audition and participation.

Audition Fee: $35
Participation Fee: $40

Colorado All State Jazz Choir

The Colorado All State Jazz Choir is open to students in the 11th and 12th grades. Currently there are two groups – the Treble Choir (SSAA) and the Mixed Choir (SATB). We hope to start a TB choir soon! Students go through a three-step audition process. The students that are selected (16 per group) then participate in the choir event in January at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, where the rehearsals and concert are a part of the CMEA conference. Students get to work with nationally and globally known vocal jazz artists as their clinicians, and often go on to participate in vocal jazz programs in universities around the United States. All directors who have students auditioning or participating must be an active member of CMEA at the time of audition and participation.

Audition Fee – $30
Acceptance Registration and Fee – $280 per student ($135 acceptance fee and $145 lodging fee)

Colorado All State Orchestra

The Colorado All State Orchestra has been providing memorable performance opportunities for the state’s top high school musicians since 1952. Conductors have programmed staples of classic orchestral repertoire as well as contemporary literature. Colorado ASO is a direct extension of the many high school instrumental music programs across the state of Colorado. ASO is supported by these programs, and as a result, being a member of a school ensemble is a requirement for a Colorado ASO audition. All directors who have students auditioning or participating must be an active member of CMEA at the time of audition and participation.

Who is Eligible?
Colorado All State Orchestra (ASO) auditions are open to students enrolled in grades 10-12. ASO is sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) and governed by CHSAA eligibility policy. In order to participate in the ASO event, the student must be enrolled in a high school instrumental music program. Homeschooled students and students who attend a high school that does not offer music must enroll and actively participate in a curricular high school music program in order to be eligible to audition for ASO. This participation requirement is enforceable at the time of audition, and at the time of the event. Participation in private, extracurricular youth orchestra programs does not fulfill this requirement.

Audition Fee – $35
Participation Fee – $55
